Officially Halfway Through The Year. Where Has The Time Gone?

Apparently, it is July.

Officially halfway through the year.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I am fairly certain it was Christmas about three weeks ago.

The Easter eggs have barely disappeared from the supermarkets, the summer holidays are almost here, and somehow we are already looking at the second half of the year.

You start January full of plans, goals and good intentions. Then you blink and six months have vanished.

Time Has A Funny Habit Of Disappearing

Running a business can feel a bit like trying to carry water in a sieve.

You start the day with a plan. A proper plan. The sort of plan that is going to make today productive, organised and successful.

Then the phone rings.

An email comes in. A customer needs an update. Somebody wants to move an appointment. Before you know it, half the day has disappeared and the thing you actually sat down to do is still sitting there waiting for you.

Busy Does Not Always Mean Productive

Most business owners are not short of things to do.

In fact, the problem is usually the complete opposite.

There is always another email to answer, another customer to call back, another piece of admin waiting patiently in the background. The days become full very quickly.

The challenge is that a full day and a productive day are not always the same thing.

The Hours We Never Really Notice

The biggest time thieves are rarely the obvious ones.

It is not usually one huge task that causes the problem. It is the collection of little jobs that quietly nibble away at the day.

Ten minutes returning a call here. Fifteen minutes answering emails there. Twenty minutes rearranging appointments. It all sounds harmless until you add it together.

By the end of the week, those little interruptions have quietly stolen hours that could have been spent elsewhere.

Usually From The Things That Matter Most

For many business owners, those lost hours come from family time.

You finish work, have your tea, finally sit down for the evening and then remember the emails you have not replied to.

So out comes the laptop.

What was supposed to be an evening spent relaxing becomes an evening spent catching up. Again.

Most people do not start a business because they dream of answering emails on the sofa at nine o’clock at night.

The Second Half Starts Now

The good thing about reaching the halfway point of the year is that it gives us a chance to stop and think.

If the first six months have disappeared this quickly, how do you want the next six to look?

The truth is, none of us can slow time down. If somebody figures out how to do that, please let us know.

What we can do is make sure we are spending our time on the things that genuinely matter, whether that is growing the business, looking after customers, or simply having more time for ourselves and our families.

Sometimes, a little bit of support can make a much bigger difference than people realise.
