I first met Martin a few years ago through 4Networking, he was a freelance journalist, often under pressure, but aren’t we all?! A lovely man, not fat, seemed to have a decent lifestyle, but we never know what stress is in someone’s life.
In December 2013 whilst crossing a busy street in Tamorth, Martin suffered a stroke, he also just missed being hit by a bus at the same time. The paralysis to one half of his body was instant and he used the “good” side of his body to crawl across the road to safety, where a local shopkeeper came to his rescue and immediately called an ambulance. Within minutes the paramedics were by Martins side and immediately recognised the symptoms of a stroke.
Martin believes that his life-changing stroke was a direct result of working long, unsocial hours in a stressful environment. His powerful presentations to businesses and other organisations emphasise that a stroke can happen to anyone of any age, but that the risk can be reduced.
When we are self employed or running our own business, the buck stops here. We often think if we don’t agree to stupidly tight deadlines that we won’t get the work, we end up working stupid hours, neglecting family and friends “because we have to”. In turn, all this puts more pressure on us as friends and family start badgering us to take time out – the loved ones often see the warning signals before we do, poor food choices, eating on the go, lack of sleep, overweight, no exercise, irritability, the signs are all there.
Martin is now a massive advocate of the importance of a good work / life balance, eating well, relaxing, getting proper sleep and putting financial planning in place. Having made an incredible recovery Martin now works to stop people making the same mistakes that he once made and to inspire them into making better choices and lifestyle changes Although medically retired from work, he is a member of the Stroke Association funding panel and a mentor to stroke survivors and carers.
